Art & Travel - New Jersey & Delaware

February 2023

Drove to New Jersey and Delaware in my little hybrid car for President’s Day weekend. I’m a huge fan of quirky roadside attractions (my go-to websites are RoadsideAmerica.com and AtlasObscura.com), they’ve been a great source of amazing finds and funny misadventures. Highlights on this trip: A shipwrecked WWII supply ship made of concrete off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey; the “Fountain of Youth,” a giant metal fishing bobber, and steam-punk tree house (it was made for a Burning Man event) at Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware.

The Victorian homes around Cape May are gorgeous! Drawing buildings and capturing the charm and character of a structure is something I’m still working on and these homes are incredible inspiration. I decided to sketch one of the homes on graph paper with a pen and started adding colored highlighter. There was a page in my sketchbook that I started to collage but wasn’t finished yet, so I decided to lay in the Victorian home pen drawing and add more layers of paint and ink. I’m happy with how it turned out and excited to keep working on this technique.

If you’re ever in Cape May, take the ferry that goes over the Delaware Bay and brings you to the Southern Delaware area. The ferry trip was lovely and you might spot a whale (happened to catch a glimpse of as a whale came up for air) and Rehoboth Beach has a great boardwalk, clean beach and lots of delicious foods to enjoy - especially Thrasher’s French Fries!
